Embodied Practices
for Self and Collective Well-being
4-day “dance as movement research” course
Concept
In the modern world people are often too stuck in their minds. What occurs when we allow thoughts and feelings to emerge within the context of movement, extending the notion of mind - to bodymind?
In this 4-day movement workshop, we will co-create a non-judgemental and soft space where experience can be integrated through the body. We will engage in non-verbal communication tools and welcome all parts of our processing capability!
Participants will hone awareness of the individual and collective self, using the concept of multiple spheres of perception. Looking through the lenses of innersphere, kinesphere and outersphere, we will research the inner realm, what's in one's reach and that which is beyond.
Starting with oneself and building trust, participants will gain a sense of their own innersphere and what moves within it. As 3 dimensional beings researching the kinesphere, we deconstruct and then reconstruct the three planes of physical existence. Building on the practices day by day, we’ll share our own and group movement patterns devised by a technique of scoring. In these scores, the movers are given a simple set of rules and move freely within them, opening up to emergent properties.
In this embodied journey we ask ourselves questions like: how can I remain in my integrity whilst moving within the group? When am I going with the flow and how am I making decisions? When is it okay to lead and when to follow? As we focus and try to define these distinctions, we’ll explore the edges where one sphere leads into another. We will ask ourselves where can a border be found and is that border clear or less defined, such as the sometimes disappearing line where the sea meets the sky?
This workshop uses improvised movement that is accessible to all levels, no previous dance experience required and there is no choreography. We’ll work with elements such as breath, closed and open eyes, physicality, getting into a fluid body and sense of self, individual and small group ensemble movements, being seen and witnessing others. Together we’ll build a common movement vocabulary using scores. If weather permits we take our research outside on the 3rd or 4th day.
The afternoons will be time for self reflection and journaling with writing prompts. There will be group reflection circles and we will record part of our movement exploration towards the end of the week so we can reflect on it together from the ‘outersphere’.
Testimonials
In 2022 this course was taught at Innsbruck University’s Peace & Conflict Studies Master Programme, which provides scholarly education in international peacebuilding, conflict transformation, development policy, diplomacy, human rights, security, and disaster management, alongside action-oriented training in teamwork, diversity, inclusion, capacity development, and intercultural communication.
[Mariana Samayoa Martinez] “I have often defined conflict as a "feeling of stuckness" like a knot in a relationship (with the self, with others) and movement helps loosen things up to create space for change and transformation. On a practical level I believe movement can be useful for processing internal conflicts and preparing the self to address external ones. These practices can also support in developing and strengthening aspects that contribute to conflict transformation such as empathy, communication, cooperation and awareness.”
[Laurent Naville] “Yes. I realized how much it matters where I am able (or willing) to put my attention/ awareness to bodily understand the situation I'm in. For example, having my eyes open doesn't mean that I see. Bringing and practicing a kind of multi-layered awareness to situations of conflict, is maybe a first step towards transformation.”
[Sabdra Okori]”My biggest take away was being able to embrace leadership”
